What does a free phone number check tell you?

PhoneCheckr is a free phone number checker that queries a national carrier database and returns four data points for every number. No account, no credit card, no trial.

Line type

Mobile, landline, or VOIP. Tells you whether the number can receive text messages and how much trust to assign to the contact.

Carrier name

The network the number is registered to: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Google Voice, Twilio, and hundreds more. Carrier data identifies VOIP providers and predicts SMS deliverability.

Validity

Whether the number has a valid format and is assigned to a carrier. Invalid numbers are either malformed or no longer in service.

Country code

Confirmed country code for the number. Catches inconsistencies in imported data where +1 was stripped or entered incorrectly.

How to check a phone number for free

Checking a phone number with PhoneCheckr takes under 10 seconds.

  1. 1
Enter the number. Type or paste any US or Canadian phone number. All common formats work: +1 (555) 123-4567, 555-123-4567, 5551234567, or with spaces.
  2. 2
Click "Check number." PhoneCheckr normalises the input to E.164 format and queries the carrier database.
  3. 3
See the result. Line type, carrier name, and validity appear on screen. No email, no sign-up, no waiting.

You can check up to 10 numbers per hour for free. The limit resets every hour. For larger lists, the bulk CSV upload processes your entire file at $0.01 per number.

Why check a phone number before using it?

Phone numbers go stale. People port to new carriers, disconnect lines, and sign up with disposable VOIP numbers. Checking a number before you call, text, or store it saves time and money.

Before sending a text

Landlines cannot receive SMS. VOIP numbers may or may not support it. Checking line type first means you only text numbers that can receive messages.

Before calling a lead

A quick check tells you whether the number is in service and whether it is a mobile line or a business landline. No more wasted dials on dead numbers.

After collecting numbers from a form

Typos, fake entries, and VOIP disposables slip through web forms. Checking each number after submission catches bad data before it enters your CRM.

When you get a call from an unknown number

A free check tells you whether the caller used a mobile, landline, or VOIP number. That context helps you decide whether to call back or ignore it.

Before importing contacts to a CRM

Batch-check your contact list before import. Remove invalid numbers and tag each record with line type so your team knows how to reach each contact.

To detect VOIP sign-ups

VOIP numbers are cheap to create and commonly used for fake accounts. Checking line type at sign-up lets you flag or block VOIP entries before they enter your system.

What a free phone checker cannot do

PhoneCheckr checks carrier-level data. It tells you whether a number is real, what type of line it is, and which network owns it. It cannot tell you who owns the number, their address, their call history, or their social media profiles. PhoneCheckr is a data-quality tool, not a people-search engine.

For more detail on what PhoneCheckr returns, see the free phone number lookup page. To check whether a specific number is real, try is this a real phone number.
