What is bulk phone number validation?

Bulk phone number validation is the process of checking a large list of phone numbers (typically exported from a CRM, ad platform, or lead database) against a national carrier database to determine whether each number is valid, what type of line it is (mobile, landline, or VOIP), and which carrier it belongs to. The output is an enriched version of your original file with those data points appended to every row.

Validating at scale is fundamentally different from a one-at-a-time lookup. When you are preparing a list of 500 contacts for an Attentive SMS campaign, or scrubbing 2,000 ZoomInfo exports before a dialing sprint, doing it number by number is not realistic. Bulk validation processes your entire list in a single job (typically in under a minute for 1,000 records) and delivers a file you can immediately filter, segment, and act on.

For each number in your file, PhoneCheckr returns four data points: line type (mobile, landline, or VOIP), carrier name (e.g., Verizon Wireless, AT&T Mobility, Google, Twilio), validity (valid or invalid), and country code with national format. Together these fields let you remove unreachable numbers, separate mobile-only audiences for SMS, and enrich your CRM before import.

Who needs bulk phone number validation?

Any team that works with phone number lists at scale, whether for outreach, compliance, or data hygiene, benefits from validating before they act. Here are the four most common use cases.

  • 1
SMS marketers. Before sending a campaign through Klaviyo, Attentive, Twilio, or Salesmsg, cleaning your list to remove landlines and VOIP numbers protects your sender reputation and reduces bounce rate. Carriers monitor A2P 10DLC traffic, and a high percentage of undeliverable messages can trigger filtering or suspension of your sending number. Running bulk validation before every send keeps your deliverability metrics clean and ensures you are only spending money on numbers that can actually receive text messages.
  • 2
Sales teams. Exports from ZoomInfo and Apollo frequently include a mix of mobile, office landline, and VOIP numbers. Before a dialing sprint, validating the list lets reps skip landlines that have no chance of reaching a decision-maker's cell, and flag VOIP numbers as lower-priority signals. Connect rate improves when your dialer is working a pre-scrubbed list of verified mobile numbers, and reps waste fewer cycles on no-answers and disconnected lines.
  • 3
RevOps and data teams. Before a bulk import into HubSpot or Salesforce, validating phone fields prevents bad data from polluting your CRM. Invalid numbers in your contact database skew reporting, break automation workflows, and make segment sizes look larger than they are. Appending line type and validity to each record at import time means your properties stay accurate and your sales team sees trustworthy data from day one.
  • 4
Lead generation teams. Gating your SDR queue on validated mobile numbers only ensures that the leads your reps are calling are actually contactable. Lead lists sourced from ad platforms, form fills, and third-party data vendors often contain a significant percentage of landlines, disconnected numbers, and VOIP entries. Bulk validation at the top of the funnel means SDRs spend their time on real prospects, not on number-not-in-service errors.

How bulk phone number validation works

PhoneCheckr processes your entire CSV in three steps. No signup required. Bulk lookups are $0.01 per number.

  1. 1
Upload your CSV file on the homepage. Go to phonecheckr.com/#upload and drag your CSV file into the upload zone, or click to browse. Your file can have any number of columns and any column headers. PhoneCheckr only needs to know which column contains the phone numbers. Supported number formats include +1 international, 10-digit local, and all common hyphenated or parenthesized variations.
  2. 2
Map the phone number column. After upload, you will see a column-mapping step where you select which field in your CSV contains the phone numbers. PhoneCheckr will attempt to auto-detect the correct column based on common header names like "phone," "mobile," or "cell," but you can override the selection manually. Once mapped, PhoneCheckr begins processing all records in parallel against the national carrier database.
  3. 3
Download your enriched report. When processing completes, you receive a downloadable CSV with your original columns intact plus new columns for line type (mobile, landline, or VOIP), carrier name, validity, country code, and national format. Filter on line type in Excel or Google Sheets, import directly to HubSpot or Salesforce, or upload the mobile-only segment to Klaviyo, Attentive, or Salesmsg. The report includes line type, validity, and carrier name for every row at $0.01 per number.

What does a bulk validation report include?

Every row in your downloaded report includes the following enrichment fields alongside your original data, all included at $0.01 per number.

FieldValuesAvailable in
Line typeMobile, Landline, VOIPIncluded
ValidityValid, InvalidIncluded
Country codee.g., +1, +44, +61Included
National formate.g., (555) 123-4567Included
Carrier namee.g., AT&T Mobility, Verizon, Google, TwilioIncluded

The carrier name field is particularly valuable for SMS senders who need to understand routing costs, for sales teams who want to distinguish direct-mobile numbers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile) from VOIP-assigned numbers (Google, Twilio, Bandwidth), and for RevOps teams appending enrichment data to HubSpot or Salesforce contact records.

Why remove landlines and VOIP before an SMS campaign?

When you send an SMS campaign through Klaviyo, Attentive, Twilio, or Salesmsg, the platform submits messages to carrier networks for delivery. Messages sent to landline numbers are undeliverable. Landlines physically cannot receive SMS. Messages sent to most VOIP numbers are also undeliverable or silently dropped, depending on the provider. Both scenarios result in a failed delivery event that the carrier network logs against your sender ID.

Under A2P 10DLC (the US regulatory framework for application-to-person SMS), carriers monitor the deliverability rate of registered campaigns. A sustained high bounce rate, driven by a list full of landlines and VOIP numbers, can trigger message filtering, reduced throughput, or suspension of your sending number. Recovering a flagged 10DLC campaign registration is slow and expensive. Cleaning your list before sending is far cheaper than repairing the damage afterward.

Beyond compliance risk, there is straightforward budget waste. If 15% of your list is landlines and VOIP, you are paying your SMS platform to attempt 150 messages per 1,000 that can never succeed. At scale (say, 50,000 contacts), that is 7,500 wasted message credits per send. Bulk validation at $0.01 per record pays for itself immediately against the cost of those failed sends.

Why clean your call list before dialing?

For outbound sales teams running power dialers or parallel dialing sequences in tools like Salesloft, Outreach, or Apollo, list quality directly determines connect rate. A rep who dials 100 numbers expecting 8–12 connects will hit dramatically fewer if 20 of those numbers are landlines that go to a business switchboard or a residential phone that rings indefinitely, and another 10 are VOIP numbers that ring briefly and drop.

VOIP numbers are a useful prioritization signal, separate from filtering. A ZoomInfo or Apollo export that contains VOIP numbers often includes numbers that contacts set up specifically to avoid being reached: Google Voice burner numbers, virtual office lines, or numbers from a previous business role. Routing those numbers to the bottom of your dialing sequence, or flagging them for email-first outreach, is a better use of your SDR team's time than burning dial attempts on them.

Landlines waste dialer slots in a different way. A landline number for a decision-maker at a company often reaches a front-desk receptionist or a general voicemail box rather than the individual you are targeting. Pre-scrubbing landlines from ZoomInfo or Apollo exports before loading them into your sequence means your reps are working verified direct-mobile numbers, where live-answer rates are significantly higher.
