What is phone number enrichment

Phone number enrichment is the process of adding data fields to a phone number beyond the digits themselves. When you run a list through PhoneCheckr, each number comes back with two additional columns: line type (mobile, landline, voip, or invalid) and carrier name (the company that currently holds the number). That data turns a flat list of phone numbers into a segmentable contact file.

Without enrichment, a list of phone numbers tells you who to contact but not how to reach them. With enrichment, you know which numbers can receive SMS, which are voice-only, and which should be removed before you spend money on outreach.

Enrichment runs in bulk. You upload a CSV, PhoneCheckr checks each number against the national carrier database, and you download the same file with two new columns appended. There is no per-number API integration to build and no manual lookup required.

What data PhoneCheckr adds to your numbers

Every number in your upload gets two fields added to its row.

  Line type — one of four values: mobile, landline, voip, or invalid. Mobile numbers can receive SMS and calls. Landlines accept calls only. VOIP numbers depend on the provider, though most can receive SMS. Invalid numbers are disconnected or unassigned and will fail on every channel.

  Carrier name — the network currently holding the number. For mobile numbers this is typically AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, or a regional MVNO. For VOIP numbers it identifies the provider: Google Voice, Twilio, Bandwidth, or others. Carrier data is useful for routing decisions and for assessing whether a VOIP number is a legitimate business line or a forwarding number.

All original columns in your CSV are preserved. Names, emails, addresses, custom fields, and any other data you uploaded come back intact in the same row order. Learn more about carrier lookup.

How to enrich phone numbers in bulk

The process takes three steps and under ten minutes for most list sizes.

   Prepare your CSV. Export your contact list from your CRM, spreadsheet, or marketing platform. The file needs at least one column containing phone numbers. Other columns — name, email, company, notes, lead stage — will pass through unchanged. Phone numbers can be formatted with or without country codes, dashes, or parentheses; PhoneCheckr normalizes them automatically.

   Upload to PhoneCheckr. Drop your CSV onto the upload area. PhoneCheckr detects the phone number column and queues each row for lookup against the carrier database. A list of 1,000 numbers typically finishes in under a minute. Larger lists of 10,000 or more take a few minutes.

   Download the enriched file. When processing is complete, you get a CSV with your original data plus a "Type" column and a "Carrier" column appended to each row. Open it in Excel or Google Sheets, filter by Type, and you have a segmented list ready for import.

   Segment and import. Filter the Type column: remove invalid rows, route mobile numbers to SMS campaigns, send landlines to a voice-only cadence, and review VOIP numbers by carrier.
